DESCRIPTION:Ascension Day is observed in the United States on the 40th day of Easter. It commemorates Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven\, according to the New Testament of the Bible. \nIs Ascension Day a Public Holiday?\nAscension Day is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. \nWhat Do People Do?\nAscension Day is officially celebrated on a Thursday on the 40th day of Easter\, or 39 days after Easter Sunday. Some churches in the United States join forces to celebrate a combined Day of Prayer and Ascension Day service\, which may include a time for reflection. A few churches also organize a “church crawl”\, where people travel from one church to another and experience the different prayer events. \nOther churches may feature combined cathedral choirs that offer a special solemn Eucharist written especially for Ascension Day. A social time usually follows the service.  Some Lutheran churches hold a special ceremony where the Paschal candle is extinguished and removed after the reading of the gospel on Ascension Day. \nPublic Life\nAscension Day is not a federal public holiday in the United States. Government offices\, organizations\, educational institutions and public transit systems run to their usual schedules. \nBackground\nAscension Day is one of the earliest Christian festivals dating back to the year 68 CE. According to the New Testament in the Bible\, Jesus Christ met several times with his disciples during the 40 days after his resurrection to instruct them on how to carry out his teachings. It is believed that on the 40th day he took them to the Mount of Olives\, where they watched as he ascended to heaven. \nAscension Day occurs ten days before Pentecost and it always falls on a Thursday. However\, some churches\, particularly in the United States\, celebrate it on the following Sunday. \nMany Eastern Orthodox churches calculate the date of Pascha (Easter) according to the Julian calendar\, rather than the Gregorian calendar used by many western churches\, so their Ascension Day usually occurs after the western observance. \nSymbols\nAscension Day celebrations include processions symbolizing Christ’s entry into heaven and\, in some countries\, chasing a “devil” through the streets and dunking it in a pond or burning it in effigy – symbolic of the Messiah’s triumph over the devil when he opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. \nThe liturgical color in many churches is white on Ascension Day. Symbols include the ascending Christ\, birds flying homeward\, open gates\, a lion conquering a dragon\, Elijah’s fiery chariot and a broken chain.

It falls on Sunday\, May 19\, 2024\, and most businesses follow regular Sunday opening hours in United States. \nWhat Do People Do\nIn the United States\, Christians share their perspective about the meaning of Pentecost as well as how the diversity of languages and cultures can enhance their worship and fellowship with each another. Christians see Pentecost as an expansion of God’s favor and care from Judaism to all peoples. \nMany churches celebrate Pentecost with a mass or worship service on this day. In some churches\, the secular Mother’s Day holiday is probably celebrated more frequently than the Pentecost feast. \nPublic Life\nWhitsunday is not a federal holiday in the United States. \nBackground\nAs recorded in the New Testament of the Bible\, it was on the 50th day after Easter that the apostles were praying together and the Holy Spirit descended on them. They received the “gift of tongues” – the ability to speak in other languages – and immediately began to preach about Jesus Christ to Jewish people from all over the world who flocked to Jerusalem for the Feast of Shavuot. \nChristian Pentecost became not only a commemoration of the Holy Spirit’s visit but also marks the birth of the Christian Church. It falls on Sunday\, May 26\, 2024 and most businesses follow regular Sunday opening hours in United States. \nWhat Do People Do?\nOn Trinity Sunday many Christians in the United States remember and honor the belief of an eternal God\, consisting of the Father\, Son and Holy Spirit. Many churches have special prayers on Trinity Sunday. The Athanasian Creed\, named after St Athanasius\, Archbishop of Alexandria\, is recited in some churches on Trinity Sunday because of its strong affirmation of the Triune nature of God. \nChurches and choirs across the United States have planned special activities and events centered on Trinity Sunday. These include: \n\nChoral vespers concerts.\nSpecial church services focusing on the Holy Trinity and featuring music by the trumpet and the pipe organ.\nSpecial awards given at Trinity Sunday church services.\nMeals and social events after church services.\nEvensong services.\n\nThe ordinal Sundays following Trinity Sunday are focused on Christian growth and discipleship after a long period of emphasis on the life and ministry of Jesus. In the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches\, the Sunday of Pentecost itself is called Trinity Sunday. \nPublic Life\nTrinity Sunday is not a federal holiday in the United States. \nBackground\nPope Gregory IX instituted Trinity Sunday in 828 CE. This day is notable for being the only major Christian festival that celebrates a doctrine of the church rather than an event in its sacred history. It is dedicated to the Christian belief in the Trinity – Father\, Son and Holy Spirit – and falls on the Sunday following Pentecost each year. The belief of one God in three elements is a distinctive of the Christian faith but the early church was plagued by contrary views. Trinity Sunday spread throughout the western church around the 14th century. \nSymbols\nIn some churches\, the liturgical color is white on Trinity Sunday. Images of the Trinity of the Father\, Son and Holy Spirit depict that there are three elements of one God. The Trinity is sometimes symbolized by a triangular shape formed by three overlapping oval rings or loops\, each featuring the one of the following images: the crown (father) within the top loop; the lamb (son) within the second loop (clockwise); and the dove (spirit) within the third loop (clockwise). Other shapes depicting the Trinity include Borromean rings and the triquetra. \nThe Borromean rings feature three overlapping round circles forming a triangular shape\, and in the center\, inside all the circles is the word “unitas”. The Borromean rings are named after the crest of the Borromeo family in 15th-century Tuscany. The triquetra symbol uses shapes similar to one of the oldest Christian symbols. In the triquetra\, the three equal arches of the circle express the equality of the Father\, Son\, and Holy Spirit. The union of the arches represents the unity of the Godhead. Their continuous form symbolizes eternity. Their interwoven appearance denotes the indivisibility of the Trinity. In the center of the triquetra is an equilateral triangle\, one of the most ancient Trinity symbols\, and each pair of arches formed an ellipse\, the symbol of God’s glory.
