DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth is an annual observance on June 19 to remember when Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Texas on June 19\, 1865. This day is an opportunity for people to celebrate freedom and equal rights in the United States. \nIs Juneteenth a Public Holiday?\nJuneteenth has been a federal holiday in the US since 2021. However\, the day’s official status and how it is celebrated differs from state to state. \nIt is a paid state holiday in several states including Massachusetts\, New Jersey\, New York\, and Virginia; other states celebrate it as an official observance. \nIn some states\, people employed by the state may have a day off work. It lasted until the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect on January 1\, 1863. On that date Texas was largely controlled by forces fighting for the Confederate States\, which opposed the abolition of slavery. \nOn June 19\, 1865\, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. In Galveston\, Texas\, the newly freed slaves held large public celebrations and so laid the base for future Juneteenth activities. The word ‘Juneteenth’ resulted from the words ‘June Nineteenth’ being combined together in speech. \nAfter 1865\, Juneteenth was mainly celebrated in Texas. Parks have been established on land bought by former slaves to hold Juneteenth celebrations in the Texan cities of Austin\, Houston\, and Mexia. \nToday\, it is a federal holiday and a state holiday or observance in more than half of the US states. \nJuneteenth celebrations are also held in other countries around the world\, including Ghana\, Honduras\, Japan\, Taiwan\, and Trinidad and Tobago. \nSymbols\nThe Juneteenth flag consists of a rectangle. The lower part of the rectangle is red and the upper part is blue and it has a solid white\, five-pointed star at its center. The star is surrounded by a white outline of a 12-pointed star. The Juneteenth flag is often displayed with the United States flag to symbolize that slavery is illegal. \nIn Texas and some other southern states\, the traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda. This variety of cream soda is a sweet\, soft drink flavored with orange and lemon oils and vanilla. It is available in different flavors and with or without caffeine and sugar.

For the fashion conscious\, it is seen as acceptable to wear white clothing\, particularly shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day. DESCRIPTION:Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday. It is not a federal holiday in the United States of America (USA). Some Easter traditions continue on the Easter Monday\, such as the egg rolling race at the White House. \nIs Easter Monday a Public Holiday?\nAlthough Easter Monday is not a public holiday\, businesses and schools may be closed because it falls on the same date as Patriots’ Day in 2025\, which is a public holiday in Maine and Massachusetts. \nWhat Do People Do?\nEgg rolling races are held in the United States. There is a big race held on the lawn of the White House in Washington DC on Easter Monday. Sometimes even the President takes part in the “White House Easter Egg Roll”\, which was hosted by the First Lady in 2007. Eggs are rolled down a hill or slope and there is a variety of activities\, as well as food and entertainment\, for families. \nThe White House Easter egg collection involves a tradition that began in 1994 where each state sends a decorated egg to the White House for display. Artists from across the United States created decorated eggs that represent each state and the District of Columbia. Each year the artists vote amongst themselves to select the artist to create the following year’s commemorative egg which is presented to the President and First Lady. The collection is coordinated by the American Egg Board. \nPublic Life\nEaster Monday is not a federal holiday. Most aspects of public life are not any different to any other Monday. They may also visit a mosque or hold a festive dinner at the White House to mark the occasion. \nEid Celebrations Can Span up to Three Days\nEach year\, in the run-up to Eid\, Muslims across the US agree to disagree on the question: when is Eid? \nEid al-Fitr happens on the first day of Shawwal\, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. In the western Gregorian calendar\, the holiday falls about 11 days earlier each year. \nHowever\, the beginning of each Islamic month and the dates of Muslim holidays are determined by Moon sightings. A new month begins when the Crescent Moon is spotted in the evening sky after the New Moon phase. But the rules of what constitutes a valid sighting vary. So\, some communities may celebrate two days\, sometimes even three days\, before or after other communities. Still\, within each community\, Eid usually only lasts for one day. \nInitiated by Prophet Muhammad\nScholars generally agree that Prophet Muhammad introduced the feast\, although the timing is debated. He became active with the Community Service Organization\, which helped fight racial and economic discrimination against Chicano residents. \nChávez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in the early 1960s. He focused attention on the plight of migrant farm workers and gained support to have his organization be the first successful farm workers’ union in the United States. He used principles of non-violence\, with strikes and boycotts. César Chávez remained president of United Farm Workers of America (AFL-CIO) until his death on April 23\, 1993. \nFunding for César Chávez Day was temporarily suspended in California around 2004 due to problems with the budget in the state. The courts were divided about the holiday in 2005\, where some legal staff workers attended work but the doors to court rooms and filing offices were locked. Current efforts are made to push for César Chávez Day to become a national holiday in the United States. \nSymbols\nMany schools\, community centers and parks are named after César Chávez in the United States. This practice is also called Ehyaa. \nThis “Night of Power” is considered the most appropriate time of the entire year to pray for salvation and blessings. It is believed that a Muslim’s past sins are forgiven if the person prays throughout this night. Many people assemble at mosques during the Isha’ prayer\, with many prayers being made until midnight. \nPublic Life\nLaylat al-Qadr is not a federal public holiday in the United States. However\, many Islamic organizations and businesses may alter their opening hours and there may be some congestion around mosques\, particularly in the evening and at night. \nBackground\nLaylat al Qadr commemorates the night in 610 CE when Allah revealed the Koran (Islamic holy book) to the prophet Muhammad. The angel Gabriel first spoke to the prophet during that time\, which marked the beginning of Muhammed’s mission. These revelations continued throughout the remainder of his life\, according to Islamic belief. \nChildren begin studying the Koran from an early age and they celebrate the moment when they have read all the chapters for the first time. Many adults try to memorize the Koran. This day is also known as the Night of Power or the Night of Destiny. \nThere is a difference of opinion about the date for Laylat al-Qadr but\, in general\, it is agreed that it is most likely to be in the last 10 nights of Ramadan\, with the odd nights being more likely. Of the odd nights\, the night of the 27th (which is the night before the 27th of Ramadan\, as the Islamic day starts with nightfall) is most likely\, according to many Muslim scholars. \nThe Prophet Mohammad spent long periods\, particularly during Ramadan\, meditating about the world around him and looking for help to guide his people away from the moral evils and idolatry. On some occasions\, he traveled to the Cave of Hira\, a small cave in the hills near Mecca\, now in Saudi Arabia. It is believed that at some point\, probably in 610 CE\, he received the Koran’s first verses from God. \nLaylat al-Qadr marks the anniversary of this date. However\, it is unclear as to exactly when the revelations occurred. Hence many Muslims regard all of the last ten days of Ramadan as particularly holy and make an effort to visit a mosque and to read the Koran in this period.

The June solstice marks the northernmost point of its journey. \nThe subsolar point moves north and south during the year because the Earth’s axis is tilted at an angle of about 23.4° in relation to the ecliptic\, an imaginary plane created by Earth’s path around the Sun. Eventually\, the accumulated lag becomes so large that it falls on the following date. \nTo realign the calendar with the tropical year\, a leap day is introduced (nearly) every four years. People dress in pure white and gather together in a common place to color each other with gulal\, which are colored powders and other form of dyes. A popular activity is the throwing of water balloons at one another\, sometimes called lola. \nPublic Life\nHoli is a restricted holiday in India\, so government offices and most businesses remain open. Individuals have the flexibility to take time off to celebrate the holiday if they choose. It is not a nationwide public holiday in countries such as Australia\, Canada\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States but some cities may hold large celebrations for the occasion. \nBackground\nHoli was first celebrated as an agricultural festival celebrating the arrival of spring but has now evolved into a time when everyone throws off the gloom of winter and rejoices in the colors and liveliness of spring. The day observes the various events in Hindu mythology and disregards the social norms by participating in the festivities. \nHoli is accompanied by many legends but there are two stories that serve as the origin of Holi traditions. The story of Krishna and Radha is said to be the basis for the ritual of throwing and applying colored water and powder. According to legend\, the young Krishna complained to his mother\, Yashoda that Radha was so fair and he was so dark. Yashoda advised him to apply color to Radha’s face and see how her complexion would change. Thus\, Holi is now become a festival of colors not only to celebrate the coming of spring but also to disregard social norms and to focus on enjoying the festivities. \nAnother legend behind Holi is that an evil king tried to kill his son\, Prahalada\, a devoted follower of the god Vishnu. The king\, Hiranyakashipu\, challenged Prahalada to sit on a pyre and asked (though some believed she was forced) his sister\, Holika\, who the king believed was immune to fire\, to sit with his son in the fire. When the fire started\, everyone watched as Holika burned to death\, but Prahalada survived without any injuries due to his devotion to Vishnu. According to some accounts\, Holika begged Prahalada for forgiveness before her death\, so he promised that the burning of Holika would be remembered every year at Holi. \nSymbols\nThe bonfire represents the burning of Holika\, the triumph of good over evil. All of the dead leaves\, twigs and dirt that is collected during the winter month\, is thrown into the fire to symbolize the evil spirits. The ashes from the bonfire are believed to provide protection against diseases. Different colored powder or gulal\, oils and water represent the arrival of spring and its vibrant colors. \nNote: It is not possible to mention every activity that takes place on this occasion as celebrations vary in different regions. Debutantes are introduced at the Ball Tableau as a formal introduction to society. \nPeople throw trinkets like plastic jewelry and sweets to crowds as part of the customary “parade throw” at New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebration. During the Bacchus parade\, the king’s float throws doubloons with the image of the “Celebrity King” to parade watchers. \nA rare item you can catch from a Mardi Gras parade is the New Orleans Zulu or Golden Coconut\, a painted coconut with added glitter\, either in gold or painted like Zulu faces. The person who gets the piece of the cake containing the hidden baby charm or little Jesus figurine is dubbed the “King” of that year’s Mardi Gras. \nCrawfish Étoufée\, a thick stew served with white rice\, is another traditional Cajun and Creole dish served in New Orleans at Mardi Gras. \nHistory of Mardi Gras in the US\nMardi Gras celebrations in the United States go back as early as 1703\, when French soldiers held festivities in Mobile\, Alabama. Back then it was more of a pre-Lent celebration akin to festivities on Shrove Tuesday in modern-day France. \nMardi Gras became a parade event in 1857\, when the Cowbellion de Rakin Society\, the first of Mobile’s organizations that journeyed to New Orleans\, set up a Mardi Gras celebration with the first carnival society\, the Mistick Krewe of Comus. \nDuring the Covid-19 pandemic\, parades and large gatherings were canceled. In order to keep the spirit alive\, many New Orleans residents decorated their houses and front yards in spectacular fashion\, earning the 2021 festivities the nickname “Yardi Gras”.

The advertisement spaces are highly coveted and companies pay huge premiums to produce and air their ads. \nWhat Is the Super Bowl?\nThe Super Bowl is the final game of the NFL season\, a campaign that usually begins on the Thursday after Labor Day during the previous year. With the exception of the Kickoff Game\, most other games are played on Sundays and Mondays\, though sometimes\, games can be scheduled on other days of the week. 32 teams play 17 games each\, making the season 272 games long. \nThe Workings of an NFL Season\nThe 32 teams are divided into two conferences—the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The 16 teams in each of the conferences are further divided into four divisions: North\, South\, East\, and West Divisions. \nDuring a season\, each team in a division plays six times—two games against each of the other teams in that division\, one in their home city\, and one away from home. The driver’s request was standard practice of racial segregation in buses at the time. Rosa Parks refused to leave her seat on the grounds of fairness\, freedom and equality. As a result\, she was arrested and convicted of violating the laws of segregation\, known as the “Jim Crow” laws. She appealed her conviction and formally challenged the legality of segregation. At the same time\, civil rights activists\, including Martin Luther King Jr\, boycotted the Montgomery bus system. \nThe boycott lasted for 381 days\, into December 1956\, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the segregation law was unconstitutional and the Montgomery buses should be integrated. This boycott kick-started other civil rights protests throughout the U.S. Over the years\, the Rosa Parks bus has become a symbol of the fight for equal rights. It has been fully restored and is now displayed in the Henry Ford Museum. Rosa Parks’ Day\, on February 4\, is also known as the Day of Courage.

Many weather researchers questioned the groundhog’s accuracy in predicting the weather\, but some of the groundhog’s fans may not agree. \nPublic Life\nGroundhog Day is an observance but it is not a public holiday in the United States. However\, areas around parks and some streets may be busy or congested in towns\, such as Punxsutawney\, where Groundhog Day events are popular. \nRoots in Nature\nThousands of years ago when animalism and nature worship were prevalent\, people in the area of Europe now known as Germany believed that the badger had the power to predict the coming of spring. They watched the badger to know when to plant their crops. By the time the first German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania they probably understood that this was not true but the tradition continued. \nUnfortunately\, there were not many badgers in Pennsylvania so the groundhog was substituted for the badger. Tradition has it that if the groundhog sees its shadow on February 2 it will be frightened by it and will then return to its burrow\, indicating that there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If it does not see its shadow\, then spring is on the way. \nPunxsutawney Phil\nPunxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the United States in the 1800s. The first official trek to Gobbler’s Knob was made on February 2\, 1887. It is said that Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog) was named after King Phillip. He was called Br’er Groundhog prior to being known as Phil. Canada also celebrates Groundhog Day. \nThe movie “Groundhog Day” from 1993\, starring comedian Bill Murray\, made Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania famous worldwide. DESCRIPTION:Many Muslims in the United States observe Isra and Mi’raj (Al Isra’ wal Miraj\, Lailat al Mi’raj\, or Laylat al Miraj). This event commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascent into heaven. It is observed on the 27th day of Rajab\, the seventh month in the Islamic calendar. \nIs Isra and Mi’raj a Public Holiday?\nIsra and Mi’raj is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. \nWhat Do People Do?\nCustoms and traditions that center on Isra and Mi’raj vary in the United States. Many Muslims make special prayers in the evening. Some people attend prayer services and sermons at Islamic centers or mosques while others observe Isra and Mi’raj quietly at home. Some Muslims celebrate the event over two days. \nConferences about Isra and Mi’raj were held in some parts of the United States in recent times. This event gives people the chance to reflect on the importance of prayer.
