SUMMARY:Eid al-Adha
DESCRIPTION:For the more than 3 million Muslims in the US\, Eid al-Adha is one of the most important dates in the calendar. How do they celebrate? \nIs Eid al-Adha a Public Holiday?\nAlthough Eid al-Adha is not a public holiday\, businesses and schools may be closed because it falls on the same date as Juneteenth Freedom Day in 2024\, which is a public holiday in Utah. \nFestival of Sacrifice\nEid al-Adha (also spelled Eid ul-Adha) is a Muslim holiday that revolves around the concept of sacrifice. The holiday’s name is Arabic and translates as Festival or Feast of Sacrifice. \nIntroduced by the Prophet Muhammad during his lifetime\, the observance is inspired by the story of the Prophet Ibrahim. According to the Quran\, Ibrahim follows a command from Allah (God) to kill his son\, Ismail. As Ibrahim prepares for the sacrifice\, God replaces Ismail with a ram. \nA similar story appears in the Holy Scriptures of Christianity and Judaism\, though there are some differences. Most importantly\, God commands Abraham (Ibrahim) to kill his other son\, Isaac\, instead of Ishmael (Ismail). \nEid Celebrations in the US\nLike in other parts of the globe\, Muslims in the United States usually celebrate Eid al-Adha with prayer\, giving to charity\, and enjoying a festive meal. \nThe custom of sacrificing an animal at home\, widely practiced in predominantly Muslim countries\, is less common in the US. \nMorning Eid Prayers\nOn the morning of Eid al-Adha\, Muslims typically dress up in their finest clothes and assemble at the local mosque to pray together and hear a sermon. \nAt the end of the service\, people wish each other Eid Mubarak (Blessed Eid) and may exchange small gifts. \nDo US Muslims Sacrifice Animals?\nAnimal sacrifice on Eid al-Adha is a widespread custom in Muslim countries. People slaughter sheep\, cows\, or camels if they can afford it. They then distribute some of the meat among the poor and their friends. \nThis practice is much less common in the US. American Muslims often give money to charitable organizations that may distribute meat or provide other kinds of support to needy Muslim families at home or abroad. \nThose who opt to sacrifice an animal may commission a slaughterhouse instead of killing it themselves. \nA Family Feast\nLater in the day\, people usually meet with their family and friends to enjoy a festive meal together. \nMuslims in the US have cultural roots from all over the world—representing regions as diverse as Nigeria\, Pakistan\, and Indonesia—so the type of food varies greatly from one family to another. \nGenerally\, Eid al-Adha is famous for its extensive selection of savory dishes\, which is how the commemoration has earned its moniker\, Salty Eid. (Eid al-Fitr\, marking the end of Ramadan fasting\, features mostly sweet food and is aptly called the Sweet Eid.) \nPresidential Eid Greeting\nThe US president traditionally issues an official Eid greeting. They may also visit a mosque or hold a celebratory event at the White House to mark the occasion. \nSome May Celebrate in Mecca\nSome US Muslims may not celebrate Eid al-Adha at home because the observance coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. \nFor Muslims\, the Hajj is one of the most sacred religious duties\, on par with other central obligations like praying and fasting. Generally\, every Muslim is expected to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their life. \nWhen Is Eid? It’s Complicated…\nThe easy part first: Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah\, the twelfth month in the Muslim calendar. \nHowever\, the dates of Islamic holidays are difficult to determine\, and Eid is no exception. The Muslim lunar calendar relies on actual Moon sightings\, so the date of Eid is usually up for discussion until the Waxing Crescent Moon has been spotted in the evening sky following the New Moon phase. (This is why we mark dates of Muslim holidays as “Tentative Date” on our holiday pages and may adjust them as soon as the official date has been announced.) \nAt the same time\, the Islamic calendar year is about 11 days shorter than the year in the western Gregorian calendar\, so Eid falls on an earlier Gregorian date every year. \nMuslim communities also follow different rules about how exactly to determine the date. So\, even within the US\, some communities may celebrate Eid on a different date than others. \nComplicating things even further\, some Muslims may celebrate the holiday for up to three days while others observe only the first day.

However\, because it always falls on a Sunday\, most state government offices and employees observe their Sunday schedule on the day. \nWhat Do People Do?\nFather’s Day is an occasion to mark and celebrate the contribution that your own father has made to your life. Many people send or give cards or gifts to their fathers. Common Father’s Day gifts include sports items or clothing\, electronic gadgets\, outdoor cooking supplies and tools for household maintenance. \nFather’s Day is a relatively modern holiday so different families have a range of traditions. These can range from a simple phone call or greetings card to large parties honoring all of the ‘father’ figures in a particular extended family. Father figures can include fathers\, step-fathers\, fathers-in-law\, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and even other male relatives. In the days and weeks before Father’s Day\, many schools and Sunday schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for their fathers. \nBackground and symbols\nThere are a range of events\, which may have inspired the idea of Father’s Day. One of these was the start of the Mother’s Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men\, many of them fathers\, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah\, West Virginia in December 1907. \nA woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father’s Day. Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time\, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. \nSonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis\, who had pushed for Mother’s Day celebrations. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father’s Day was held in June was in 1910. Father’s Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon.

DESCRIPTION:People across the United States celebrate Flag Day on June 14 each year to honor the United States flag and to commemorate the flag’s adoption. On the same day\, the United States Army celebrates its birthday. \nIs Flag Day a Public Holiday?\nFlag Day is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. \nWhat Do People Do?\nFlag Day falls within National Flag Week\, a time when Americans reflect on the foundations of the nation’s freedom. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s ideals since its early days. During both events\, Americans also remember their loyalty to the nation\, reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice\, and observe the nation’s unity. \nMany people in the United States honor this day by displaying the American flag at homes and public buildings. Other popular ways of observing this holiday include: flag-raising ceremonies; Flag Day services; school quizzes and essay competitions about the American flag; musical salutes; street parades; and awards for special recognition. \nOrganizations such as The National Flag Day Foundation are actively involved in coordinating activities centered on the event and keeping the flag’s traditions alive. Following Flag Day is Honor America Days\, a 21-day period through to Independence Day (July 4) to honor America. During this period\, people hold public gatherings and activities to celebrate and honor the nation. \nPublic Life\nAlthough Flag Day is a nationwide observance\, it is not a public holiday in many parts of the United States. It is a legal holiday in a few areas in the USA\, such as Montour County in Pennsylvania. \nBackground\nOn June 14\, 1777\, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars on a field of blue and 13 red and white stripes—one for each state. Although the Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross is popularly attributed with designing this early version of the flag\, historians generally point to Francis Hopkinson as the creator. Hopkinson was a delegate from New Jersey and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. \nThe number of stars increased as the new states entered the Union\, but the number of stripes stopped at 15 and was later returned to 13. \nIn June 1886 Bernard Cigrand made his first public proposal for the annual observance of the birth of the flag when he wrote an article titled “The Fourteenth of June” in the old Chicago Argus newspaper. Cigrand’s effort to ensure national observance of Flag Day finally came when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of the event on June 14\, 1916. However\, Flag Day did not become official until August 1949\, when President Harry Truman signed the legislation and proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day. In 1966\, Congress also requested that the President issue annually a proclamation designating the week in which June 14 occurs as National Flag Week. \nThe President is requested to issue each year a proclamation to: call on government officials in the USA to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Flag Day; and to urge US residents to observe Flag Day as the anniversary of the adoption on June 14\, 1777\, by the Continental Congress of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. \nSymbols\nThe American flag\, also nicknamed as “Old Glory” or “star-spangled banner”\, has changed designs over the centuries. It consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white\, with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing 50 small\, white\, five-pointed stars. Each of the 50 stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory”. More than 5\,000 ships and 13\,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion\, and by the end of the day\, the troops gained a foot- hold in Normandy. Thousands of soldiers lost their lives\, but thousands more trekked across Europe to end the war. The invasion is one of history’s most significant military attacks. \nWhy D-Day Matters\nWhile the invasion of Normandy on June 6\, 1944\, usually termed D-Day\, did not end the war in Europe—that would take eleven more months—success on that day created a path to victory for the Allies. The stakes were so great\, the impact so monumental\, that this single day stands out in history.

The center’s initiative “Take 25” encourages parents\, guardians and educators to take 25 minutes to talk to children about safety. \nPublic Life\nNational Missing Children’s Day is a nation-wide observance in the United States but not a public holiday. \nBackground\nNational Missing Children’s Day was first observed in 1983\, following a proclamation by U.S. president Ronald Reagan. In the years 1979 to 1981\, a series of child abductions shocked the American public. Etan Patz was six years old when he disappeard on his way to school on May 25\, 1979. He was never found and was legally declared dead in 2001. His case received a large amount of media attention and ultimately lead to the formation of the missing children’s movement. National Missing Children’s Day falls on the anniversary of his disappearance.

DESCRIPTION:Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve the United States’ armed forces. Armed Forces Day is also part of Armed Forces Week\, which begins on the second Saturday of May. \nIs Armed Forces Day a Public Holiday?\nEven though Armed Forces Day falls on Saturday\, May 18\, 2024\, it is a working day. Most businesses follow regular opening hours in United States. \nWhat Do People Do?\nMany events across the United States take place on Armed Forces Day to honor Americans in uniform who served their country in times of war and peace. Those who are honored on this day include people who serve the Army\, Navy\, Marines\, Air Force and Coast Guard. National Guard and Reserve units may celebrate Armed Forces Day/Week over any period in May because of their unique training schedules. Events and activities may include: \n\nMulti-service military displays in areas open for the public.\nVarious educational activities that teach children about the armed forces.\n“Support the Troops” themed motorcycle rides.\nLarge parades and other local celebrations.\n\nCertain types of music are also played at Armed Forces Day events\, including at memorials and at cemeteries\, as a way to respect those in the armed forces who died for their country. For example\, buglers have played a bugle call\, known simply as Taps\, on Armed Forces Day in recent years. Taps is usually sounded by the United States military at events such as flag ceremonies\, memorial services and funerals. \nPublic Life\nTraffic and parking may be affected in areas where large-scale events are held for Armed Forces Day. \nBackground\nOn August 31\, 1949\, Louis Johnson\, who was the United States’ Secretary of Defense\, announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army\, Navy and Air Force Days. The event stemmed from the armed forces’ unification under one department – the Department of Defense. The Army\, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day too. \nThe first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on Saturday\, May 20\, 1950. The theme for that day was “Teamed for Defense”\, which expressed the unification of all military forces under one government department. According to the U.S. Department of Defense\, the day was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job was performed and the role of the military in civilian life. \nArmed Forces Day was a day for the military to show “state-of-the-art” equipment to Americans. It was also a day to honor and acknowledge Americans in the armed forces. Parades\, open houses\, receptions and air shows were held at the inaugural Armed Forces Day.  Armed Forces Day is still celebrated nationwide today and is part of Armed Forces Week. \nSymbols\nPosters and other material used to promote Armed Forces Day often show images of Americans in the armed services dressed in their uniforms. A rate of three percent was levied on incomes above $800 per year and the resulting revenue was used to help fund the American Civil War effort. However\, income tax was seen as unconstitutional and the law was repealed in 1872. The idea of a tax on personal income\, at a rate of two percent\, was reintroduced in the Revenue Act of 1894\, but the legal status of this kind of tax was still unclear. In 1913\, the “Sixteenth Amendment” to the Constitution of the United States was ratified. This cleared the way for the modern income tax system in the USA. \nThe details of the income tax system have changed greatly since 1913. The top rates of tax have varied enormously and were particularly high during the First and Second World Wars and the Great Depression. Individuals and families with very low levels of income do not have to pay income tax and may receive some subsidy via the tax system. \nIn 1913 Tax Day\, or the filing deadline\, was fixed on March 1. However\, it was moved to March 15 in 1918 and April 15 in 1955\, where it has remained since then. If April 15 falls on a Saturday\, Sunday or a civil holiday\, such as Patriot’s Day\, the deadline is extended to the next working day. An extension due to a holiday may only affect certain states. In 2007\, the residents of some states were granted an extension due to the disruption to public life in many areas caused by a huge Nor’easter storm. In some years in Washington DC\, Emancipation Day may be the reason to extend the deadline for filing an income tax return (Tax Day). In 2007\, the observance Emancipation Day in Washington DC had the effect of nationally extending the 2006 income tax filing deadline from April 16 to April 17. DESCRIPTION:Maundy Thursday\, also known as Holy Thursday\, is a Christian observance in the United States. It is the day before Good Friday and takes place during Holy Week. It commemorates Jesus Christ’s last supper and the initiation of Holy Communion (the Eucharist)\, observed in many Christian churches. \nIs Maundy Thursday a Public Holiday?\nMaundy Thursday is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. \nWhat Do People Do?\nMany Holy Thursday services\, particularly in the Catholic churches\, are held in the evenings and offer Communion (or Eucharist) to the congregation. Some priests or ministers wash parishioners’ feet in memory of the story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. Holy oils are blessed to symbolize that the sacraments have their source in Jesus Christ\, according to Christian belief. Hymns such as the Pange Lingua\, Gloria\, or Ubi Caritas\, are usually sung in some church services during this time of the year. \nSome churches offer a pot luck supper for congregation members after the Holy Thursday service. If donations are collected from the suppers\, they usually go towards charitable causes. Holy Thursday serves as a time for some Christians to donate money to the poor.  Some people also prepare a meal that includes roast lamb\, bitter herbs and wine around this time of the year. \nPublic Life\nMaundy Thursday is not a public holiday in the United States so schools\, government offices and businesses are open. Public transport providers run to their usual schedules. \nBackground\nHoly Thursday\, or Maundy Thursday\, commemorates the institution of the Eucharist\, a Christian sacrament that involves consecrating (or making holy) bread and wine. The word Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum\, which\, in English\, simply means “mandate.” In the upper room (John 13–17)\, Jesus gave His disciples the new commandment (i.e.\, the new mandate) after washing their feet. This new commandment is found in John 13:31–35. Having set an example by washing their feet\, the Lord Jesus told the Twelve: “A new commandment I give to you\, that you love one another: just as I have loved you\, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples\, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

DESCRIPTION:Holi (Dolyatra\, Doul Jatra\, Basanta-Utsav) is the Hindu festival colors that celebrates the triumph of good over evil\, good harvest\, and fertility. It usually falls in the later part of February or March. \nIs Holi a Public Holiday?\nHoli is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. \nWhat Do People Do?\nHoli is celebrated over two days in many areas\, while other areas may celebrate it for longer periods. The festival loosens the normal social restrictions by bringing people together not based on sex\, status\, and/or age. A public bonfire is usually held between 10pm and midnight to commemorate the burning of Holika on the first evening of Holi. Many sing and dance in the street while other are shouting\, cursing and causing general mayhem during the bonfire event. \nMillions of Hindus around the world celebrate Holi with a community festival. Many visit each other’s homes to distribute sweets and greet each other. Men\, women\, adult and children all take part in dances and other cultural programs during Holi. People dress in pure white and gather together in a common place to color each other with gulal\, which are colored powders and other form of dyes. A popular activity is the throwing of water balloons at one another\, sometimes called lola. \nPublic Life\nHoli is a restricted holiday in India\, so government offices and most businesses remain open. Individuals have the flexibility to take time off to celebrate the holiday if they choose. It is not a nationwide public holiday in countries such as Australia\, Canada\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States but some cities may hold large celebrations for the occasion. \nBackground\nHoli was first celebrated as an agricultural festival celebrating the arrival of spring but has now evolved into a time when everyone throws off the gloom of winter and rejoices in the colors and liveliness of spring. The day observes the various events in Hindu mythology and disregards the social norms by participating in the festivities. \nHoli is accompanied by many legends but there are two stories that serve as the origin of Holi traditions. The story of Krishna and Radha is said to be the basis for the ritual of throwing and applying colored water and powder. According to legend\, the young Krishna complained to his mother\, Yashoda that Radha was so fair and he was so dark. Yashoda advised him to apply color to Radha’s face and see how her complexion would change. Thus\, Holi is now become a festival of colors not only to celebrate the coming of spring but also to disregard social norms and to focus on enjoying the festivities. \nAnother legend behind Holi is that an evil king tried to kill his son\, Prahalada\, a devoted follower of the god Vishnu. The king\, Hiranyakashipu\, challenged Prahalada to sit on a pyre and asked (though some believed she was forced) his sister\, Holika\, who the king believed was immune to fire\, to sit with his son in the fire. When the fire started\, everyone watched as Holika burned to death\, but Prahalada survived without any injuries due to his devotion to Vishnu. According to some accounts\, Holika begged Prahalada for forgiveness before her death\, so he promised that the burning of Holika would be remembered every year at Holi. \nSymbols\nThe bonfire represents the burning of Holika\, the triumph of good over evil. All of the dead leaves\, twigs and dirt that is collected during the winter month\, is thrown into the fire to symbolize the evil spirits. The ashes from the bonfire are believed to provide protection against diseases. Different colored powder or gulal\, oils and water represent the arrival of spring and its vibrant colors. \nNote: It is not possible to mention every activity that takes place on this occasion as celebrations vary in different regions. However\, this article provides a general overview of the main celebrations that usually occur during this event. DESCRIPTION:Many Christians in the United States remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday\, which marks the beginning of Holy Week. This day is also on the Sunday before Easter Sunday. \nIs Palm Sunday a Public Holiday?\nPalm Sunday is not a public holiday. It falls on Sunday\, April 13\, 2025\, and most businesses follow regular Sunday opening hours in United States. \nWhat Do People Do?\nPrograms of sacred music are performed in many towns and cities in the United States on Palm Sunday. They are often sponsored by and held in local churches but they may also be part of the musical community’s regular concert series. These programs usually begin on or before Palm Sunday and may continue throughout Holy Week. Bethany College’s Messiah Festival in Lindsborg\, Kansas\, has been held during Holy Week for more than 100 years. \nPlays or pageants that focus on Holy Week themes are also performed on Palm Sunday. The Blessing of the Fleet in St Augustine\, Florida\, takes place on Palm Sunday each year. Shrimp trawlers and other fishing boats\, as well as privately owned vessels\, visit the town to receive a blessing. It is also customary for Christians to place blessed palm leaves in the shape of a cross behind religious images or statues in homes\, stores and restaurants in the United States. \nPublic Life\nPalm Sunday is not a federal holiday in the United States. However\, it is held on a Sunday\, which is a non-school day and non-working day for many Americans. \nBackground and Symbols\nPalm Sunday is observed among many Christian churches as part of Holy Week in the United States. The term Pascua Florida\, which in Spain originally referred to Palm Sunday\, was later applied to the festive season of Easter Week. The state of Florida received its name when Ponce de Leon first sighted the land and named it in 1513 most likely because the date was around Easter. \nPalm leaves symbolize victory and joy among many Christians in the United States. Some churches use silk plant leaves or substitute palm leaves with olive branches on Palm Sunday because palm leaves can be difficult to find in some areas in the United States.
