SUMMARY:Easter Sunday
DESCRIPTION:any Christians celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday. The Easter date depends on the ecclesiastical approximation of the March equinox. \nIs Easter Sunday a Public Holiday?\nEaster Sunday is not a public holiday. It falls on Sunday\, April 20\, 2025\, and most businesses follow regular Sunday opening hours in United States. \nWhat Do People Do?\nMany churches hold special services on Easter Sunday\, which celebrate the Jesus Christ’s resurrection after his crucifixion. Many people also decorate eggs. These can be hard boiled eggs that can be eaten later\, but may also be model eggs made of plastic\, chocolate\, candy or other materials. It is also common to organize Easter egg hunts. Eggs of some form are hidden\, supposedly by a rabbit or hare. People\, especially children\, then search for them. In some areas\, Easter egg hunts are a popular way for local businesses to promote themselves or may even be organized by churches. \nPublic Life\nEaster Sunday is not a federal holiday but a number of stores are closed in many parts of the US and if they are open\, they may have limited trading hours. In some cities\, public transit systems usually run their regular Sunday schedule\, but it is best to check with the local transport authorities if any changes will be implemented during Easter Sunday. \nBackground\nIn Pagan times\, many groups of people organized spring festivals. Many of these celebrated the re-birth of nature\, the return the land to fertility and the birth of many young animals. These are the origins of the Easter eggs that we still hunt for and eat. \nIn Christian times\, the spring began to be associated with Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. The crucifixion is remembered on Good Friday and the resurrection is remembered on Easter Sunday. The idea of the resurrection joined with the ideas of re-birth in Pagan beliefs. \nSymbols\nFor people with strong Christian beliefs\, the cross that Jesus was crucified on and his resurrection are important symbols of the period around Easter. Other symbols of Easter include real eggs or eggs manufactured from a range of materials\, nests\, lambs and rabbits or hares. Sometimes these symbols are combined\, for example\, in candy models of rabbits with nests full of eggs. Eggs\, rabbits\, hares and young animals are thought to represent the re-birth and return to fertility of nature in the spring.

SUMMARY:César Chávez Day
DESCRIPTION:César Chávez Day is observed in the United States on March 31 each year. It celebrates the birthday of César Estrada Chávez and it serves as a tribute to his commitment to social justice and respect for human dignity. \nIs César Chávez Day a Public Holiday?\nThis is a state public holiday. State government offices are closed. Some schools and businesses may also be closed on this day. \nWhat Do People Do?\nCésar Chávez Day celebrations are held in many parts of the United States. It is a state holiday in California and an optional holiday in states such as Colorado and Texas but its celebrations go beyond these three states. Other states where celebrations and various activities occur in honor of César Chávez include Arizona\, Michigan\, Nebraska and New Mexico. \nKey community leaders use this event to speak to the public about values that César Chávez showed in his lifetime and how they made a positive impact on society. Discussions\, debates and media attention may focus on issues that he was actively involved with. These issues are relevant to Americans today and center on worker’s rights\, fair wages\, pension benefits\, and medical coverage. \nMany schools have classroom activities that focus on César Chávez’s achievements\, writings and speeches on or close to César Chávez Day. Community and business breakfasts or luncheons are also held to honor César Chávez’s achievements and incite hope within American communities. \nPublic Life\nCésar Chávez Day is a state holiday in California so government offices\, educational institutions and many businesses are closed. State government offices in Colorado may grant requests for César Chávez Day in lieu of another holiday in the same fiscal year. However\, government offices must be open. César Chávez Day is an optional state holiday in Texas. \nBackground\nChávez was born on March 31 in 1927. He was a migrant farm worker from the age of 10. He became active with the Community Service Organization\, which helped fight racial and economic discrimination against Chicano residents. \nChávez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in the early 1960s. He focused attention on the plight of migrant farm workers and gained support to have his organization be the first successful farm workers’ union in the United States. He used principles of non-violence\, with strikes and boycotts. César Chávez remained president of United Farm Workers of America (AFL-CIO) until his death on April 23\, 1993. \nFunding for César Chávez Day was temporarily suspended in California around 2004 due to problems with the budget in the state. The courts were divided about the holiday in 2005\, where some legal staff workers attended work but the doors to court rooms and filing offices were locked. Current efforts are made to push for César Chávez Day to become a national holiday in the United States. \nSymbols\nMany schools\, community centers and parks are named after César Chávez in the United States. For example\, there is the César Chávez Elementary School in San Francisco. There is also a portrait of César Chávez in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC\, as well as a statue of him at the University of Texas in Austin. César Chávez is listed in the California Hall of Fame and references have been made about him in songs by well-known musicians. He was also honored with a commemorative postage stamp that the United States Postal Service issued in 2003.
